Alien species alert: Crassostrea gigas (Pacific oyster) ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) is one of 20 species in the genus Crassostrea. Although native to the Japan/Korea region, C. gigas is a hardy species that has been introduced to a number of countries worldwide, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and South America, mainly for aquaculture purposes (Mann et al., 1991; Orensanz et al., 2002). As a result, C. gigas has become the leading species in world shellfish culture, with an estimated production of 4.6 million t in 2006 (FAO, 2008). Because C. gigas does not require additional food to sustain its growth, this species is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce. Its capacity to adapt to various environmental conditions and...

Cultural practices and risk of shellfish pathogen exchanges : the oyster aquaculture in France ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Girard, Sophie; Czerwinski, N..
The first national census concerning shellfish culture in France was carried out in 2002. The main purpose was to provide accurate and comprehensive information on the number and structure of the companies using an in depth review of production factors (leases, plants, equipment's, labour and qualifications), and a survey of cultural practices up to the market level. Moreover, the census aimed to quantify the bivalve sales dedicated to consumption and to measure the livestock transfers among rearing shellfish production areas at different developmental stages: spat, intermediate products and fully grown marketable products. The French oyster production reached 109 000 metric tons in 2001. The main production was observed in Poitou-Charentes region...

First record of the exotic channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque 1818) (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae) in the Rio dos Sinos basin, RS, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Cruz,Sabrina Spindler da; Leal,Mateus Evangelista; Albornoz,Pablo César Lehmann; Schulz,Uwe Horst.
The introduction of non-native species in inland waters is one of the main threats for aquatic biodiversity. Introduced species may compete for resources, prey on native fauna, spread diseases and parasites. The channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus (Siluriformes, Ictaluridae) was first described by Rafinesque 1818 in the United States and is widely distributed in North America, south Canada and north-east Mexico. This species adapts easily to new environmental conditions, is tolerant to different habitats, and is grown easily in aquaculture, which turns it into a potential invader of natural aquatic environments. The introduction of I. punctatus occurs in Brazil since 1980, and this is the first record of its occurrence in the Rio dos Sinos basin, Brazil. A...

First record of the invasive alien species Axis axis (Erxleben, 1777) (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sponchiado,Jonas; Melo,Geruza Leal; Cáceres,Nilton Carlos.
The exotic alien species Axis axis was introduced in the Americas at the beginning of last century and since then has established itself, expanding its distribution. This is the first record of this species in Brazil. In the extreme south of the country, an individual of A. axis was recorded with a camera trap in the Espinilho State Park. The area is close to the border of Uruguay and Argentina, countries where the species is established and from where this individual presumably originated. The Pampas biome is strongly disturbed by human activity in Brazil and since many native mammal species such as the Pampas deer Ozotoceros bezoarticus are threatened regionally. It is alarming that exotic populations can potentially rapidly expand their ranges in the...

From current distinctiveness to future homogenization of the world's freshwater fish faunas ArchiMer
Villeger, Sebastien; Blanchet, Simon; Beauchard, Olivier; Oberdorff, Thierry; Brosse, Sebastien.
AimAssessing the consequences of a future increase in non-native species introductions and native species extirpations on taxonomic similarity among fish faunas. LocationWorld-wide. MethodsWe designed 42 scenarios of future species introductions and extirpations to simulate future fish composition for 1054 river basins. Using these simulated future compositions, we computed the change in taxonomic similarity among pairs of fish faunas from historical to future situation at the river basin, biogeographic realm and world scales. ResultsAccording to all our scenarios, taxonomic similarity among fish faunas will strongly increase in the future at the three spatial scales considered. Fish faunas from the Southern Hemisphere, which are currently the less...

Genetic improvement and selection in shellfish : a review based on oyster research and production ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Barre, Marc; Gerard, Andre.
Despite the economic importance of shellfish, genetic improvement has not yet had a great impact on these species. Shellfish farming is traditionally based on wild species whose natural populations are often overexploited and do not fulfill market demand. Up to now, the most effective answer to disease problems or for the improvement of productivity has been the introduction of new species. However, the introduction of new species is constrained by their ecological impact and is also limited by the availability of suitable species. Genetic improvement of local species should therefore be of great importance as a viable alternative for the long term sustainability of the shellfish industry. The different approaches to genetic improvement include...

Influence of gelatinous zooplankton on fish stocks in the Black Sea: analysis of biological time-series IBSS Repository
Grishin, A.; Daskalov, G.; Shlyakhov, V.; Mihneva, V..
Scientific information about the Black Sea ecosystem with respect to jelly plankton – fisheries interactions is reviewed. Long time-series of the main components of pelagic community: fishes, invertebrates, discussed trends, and relationships between them are analysed. The amount of information and results from the analyses will be used to formulate hypotheses about the linkages between gelatinous plankton and the other pelagic populations and the effects on fish stocks. These data will be used as a background study for the following stages in the Eurogel project: experimental work, data analyses and modelling.

Introduction into France of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer
Grizel, Henri; Heral, Maurice.
The Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) has been introduced in France on a large scale to replace cultivation of the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata), affected by a viral disease. The importation took place from 1971 to 1975, with broodstock coming from British Columbia (Canada) and spat from Japan. Good growth rate and success of the natural setting on the French Atlantic coast attested to the success of this implantation, with a production which reached 80000 t by 1976. The precautionary measures associated with this transfer Iimited the implantation of an introduced fauna, 15 years after, to: Balanus amphitrite, Aiptasia pulchella and, on the Mediterranean coast, Undaria pinnatifida and Laminaria japonica. The authors also discuss the possible...

Noroviruses associated with acute gastroenteritis in a children's day care facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJMBR
Gallimore,C.I.; Barreiros,M.A.B.; Brown,D.W.G.; Nascimento,J.P.; Leite,J.P.G..
Noroviruses (Norwalk-like viruses) are an important cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. They are the most common cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the adult population and occur in nursing homes for the elderly, geriatric wards, medical wards, and in hotel and restaurant settings. Food-borne outbreaks have also occurred following consumption of contaminated oysters. This study describes the application of a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay using random primers (PdN6) and specific Ni and E3 primers, directed at a small region of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase-coding region of the norovirus genome, and DNA sequencing for the detection and preliminary characterisation of noroviruses in outbreaks of gastroenteritis in...

Origine et état de la population de Crepidula fornicata (Gastropoda Prosobranchia) sur le littoral français ArchiMer
Blanchard, Michel.
The introduction of the limpet Crepidula fornicata on French coasts occurred through a number of stages of unequal amplitude. The two main stages are the result of a) its transportation on the hulls of the Allies ships during WWII, and b) the voluntary introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas in the 1970s. A recent assessment of its distribution shows that it can be found from the North Sea to the Mediterranean shores, resulting in some conflicts, due to its high density.
